MR. LOWE SCIENCE
RUTH DOYLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
What a year - it's always bittersweet at the end of the year as you reflect and think about all the memories and relationships that have been made.
We started the year off learning about how to conduct science and learning about the smallest unit of life… the. CELL! We also had a special guest with us for a while – Miss Curtwright – and she helped us learn all about plant and animal cells.
Then we learned about ecosystems and built an ecosystem of our own! After Christmas would began learning about the three states of matter and physical properties of matter. After that we got to go watch doctor kaboom at UCA and learn all about electricity. After this we began learning about rocks and minerals and even got to dig for Fossils! Last, but not least, we learned about space and the planets and were visited by crazy aliens!
I hope you learned a lot about science, the natural world, and most importantly about asking questions and being curious. I know you'll do great next year in six grade and if you ever need anything you know where to find me upstairs!
Enjoy the 2016 end-of-the-year slideshow video! Be kind to each other and go change the world!
This week we will be working on our famous scientist research project. The students will pick a scientist, research them, and create a "wanted" poster featuring that scientist. All instructions on this project are posted on Google Classroom. This is NOT HOMEWORK... but something we will work on in class.
On a lighter note this Thursday is "water" day (cost 5.00) and this Friday is our "fishing derby" (3 or less write-ups are allowed to attend)! The students need to wear appropriate swim wear on Thursday and also bring a towel and change of cloths. Friday students will be provided with all necessary fishing gear so no need to bring a pole or bait... we have it covered!
Make sure on BOTH days sunscreen is applied and Friday it night be a good idea for them to wear a hat or sunglasses (but are not necessary).
Week at a Glance…
Monday (A): Work on research and "wanted" poster for famous scientist
Tuesday (B): Same as Monday
Wednesday (Fast Day): Finish up "wanted" poster and turn in!

This week we are wrapping up the “Adopt an Alien” presentations. It has been so much fun listening to the presentations and hearing the explanation of the aliens characteristics based on their home planets. We have had aliens of all sizes and shapes, different colors, some with lights, some that stick to windows, and some that needed a cooler to stay cold on their long journey!
This week we are going to begin one last research project… we will be making “Wanted Posters” for famous scientist! This will not be as extensive as the Adopt-an-Alien project and will be done only in the classroom. No supplies needed!
